local government

Central and local government have a legal obligation to make their websites accessible to those with visual or other impairments, under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Despite this, many do not. Though governed by different legislation, the United States has already seen cases of 'accessibility' litigation fought successfully.

In Britain there are approximately 10,000 local councils and many of their websites do not meet the legal standards, or they do not have a web presence at all. As we have a good working knowledge of such websites (one of our technical advisors is a former local government officer and national award winning webmaster) we can revamp your current site to meet the legal requirements or create sites for those who do not have one.

A JDP designed local authority website will display your public information in a clear and concise manner that meets all accessibility guidelines, with an end user preference setting mechanism. The following criteria will be applied to all new build as standard:

  1. W3C compliant CSS2 & XHTML 1.0 Strict markup
  2. Applying of RNIB recommendations
  3. Government Access Key System
  4. Internal Search Engine
  5. Style Switcher to set text size & page colours
  6. Title Tags
  7. Table Summaries
  8. Stand alone video clips (if requested)
  9. Stand alone animated Flash Slideshows (if requested)

Whether you are a borough, city, district, town or parish council we can upgrade your current site or create a web presence for you that will meet your legal obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
